The uncertainty surrounding the Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Local Government Area (LGA) primaries is attributed to the recent Supreme Court ruling on the November 11, 2023, gubernatorial election, according to Trumpeta newspapers.
APC members in Imo State are still awaiting a confirmed date for the primaries to elect councilors and chairpersons. Initially slated for the first week of August 2024, the party has yet to finalize a new date for the elections.
TheHeartlander reports that although official dates have not been set, party insiders have proposed several dates, all of which have been postponed.
The delay is linked to the Supreme Court’s ruling on the state’s governorship dispute. Prior to the court’s decision, Governor Uzodimma was frequently in Abuja, where the ruling was delivered. His absence from Imo State hindered his ability to oversee the primaries as the party leader.
As APC leader, Uzodimma’s presence was crucial for the primaries. Despite attempts by party chairman Hon. Macdonald Kelechi Ebere to schedule a meeting with aspirants last Thursday, the event was delayed due to the Supreme Court ruling.
Sources suggest that rumored pressures to remove Uzodimma led him to focus on securing his position by staying in Abuja. This left the party leadership struggling to organize the primaries.
At the time of this report, it is expected that an official date for the primaries will be announced this week, following Governor Uzodimma’s return to Imo State.
