Tension has risen among members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State, particularly those seeking the party’s ticket for the upcoming Local Government Area (LGA) elections on September 21, 2024.
After a period of uncertainty regarding the election guidelines, Governor Uzodimma revealed his intention to use a consensus approach for the primaries. During a recent meeting, he informed party leaders and aspirants that the APC constitution permits a consensus process alongside indirect and direct methods. This, he suggested, would help avoid unnecessary conflict and division within the party.
Uzodimma also mentioned that those who do not win the primaries might be offered appointments or receive compensation.
However, the governor’s announcement was met with dismay from many aspirants, who left the meeting visibly shaken and dissatisfied. Observers noted that several aspirants showed clear signs of displeasure and opposition to the consensus approach.
The primary concern among the aspirants is that Uzodimma’s consensus formula might allow him to favor certain candidates, leaving others with limited recourse. This issue has become a central topic of debate within the APC in Imo State, as candidates confront the uncertainties surrounding the nomination process.
